Acclaimed actor Tom Hanks has announced that he has written his first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, as a way to relieve the stress and pressure that comes with making movies. The two-time Oscar winner, who is well known for his roles in films like Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan, has drawn inspiration from his own screen career for his latest work.
According to Hanks, the long and gruelling process of filming a movie can sometimes lead to a lack of curiosity and inspiration for the job. In a recent interview with the BBC, the 66-year-old actor stated, “Sometimes you just have to have some other reason to spark your imagination.” He went on to explain that he has “always” written “in some form or another”, and that his collection of short stories, Uncommon Type, which was published in 2017, has sold more than 234,000 copies in the UK alone.
Hanks began writing the 448-page novel in 2018, in between filming projects. In his own words, “I wrote wherever I was, I wrote on planes, I wrote at home, I wrote on vacation, I wrote in hotel rooms, I wrote on long weekends when I wasn’t working.” The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece promises to be a fascinating insight into the world of movie-making, as seen through the eyes of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.
Hanks is not the first Hollywood star to try his hand at writing. Many actors have found success as authors, including Steve Martin, Carrie Fisher, and Ethan Hawke. However, Hanks is one of the most successful and respected actors of his generation, and his foray into the world of literature is sure to be met with great interest from fans and critics alike.
The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece will be published by Knopf on November 9th, and is already available for pre-order. Hanks’ fans will no doubt be eagerly anticipating the release of his latest work, which promises to be a fascinating and entertaining read.
